Letterboxd is a new social networking site for sharing your taste in film.
Unlike check-in apps such as GetGlue which act more as a status update for various mediums (“I’m watching/listening to ____ right now”), Letterboxd is exclusively for film and allows you to record your opinion after you watch them via liking, rating or writing a review. Keep track of films you’ve seen in the past and watch how your tastes and opinions evolve over time or with multiple viewings. Create a “Watchlist” of films that you want to see, or share your own custom lists of whatever you wish! Like all social networks you can, of course, also follow your friends, discover what they’re watching, and create a community of like-minded film buffs.
The first thing you’ll notice about Letterboxd is just how well designed it is. It’s clean and extremely easy to navigate. Definitely a cut above other similar websites and apps. Its database is also powered by TMDb, an open-source movie database, so it has an extensive range of films and anything missing can be added by its users.
What really puts Letterboxd above the others are the little details. Minor but impressive features such as noting whether you’re re-watching a film when you log it, and the option to give multiple ratings and reviews as opinions can change on second (or more) viewings. There are also plans for many more cool new features and unlike most other social networks where users go ignored, the Letterboxd team actually listen and take into consideration everyone’s suggestions.
The website, currently in its BETA stage, is open for the public to view (mobile apps are also on the way) but registration requires an invite. If you’re interested in signing up and think you share similar tastes to me, send me a message with your email address and I’ll send you an invite code - but get in quick because I only have two none left!
